Travel and Transport

This section gives you some useful hints on how to get where you want to go.

See links on the right for further info

Public Transport

Buses, coaches and trains run to other parts of the county and beyond. They run to a timetable and on specific routes only.

Private Transport

Many of you will be thinking about learning to drive. Having your own transport does give you freedom and independence, and often opens up more opportunities for work and leisure activities. However, it doesn’t come cheap and you will need to act responsibly.

Legal issues to be aware of:

Before driving any car you must have a provisional or full driving licence for that type of vehicle
You can apply for a provisional driving licence for mopeds at 16 years and car and motorcycles at 17 years
Youngsters with mobility problems and who get Disability Living Allowance mobility component at the higher rate can apply for a car licence at 16.
You must display L plates and be supervised by someone who is at least 21 and who has held a full licence for that type of car for at least 3 years
You must have valid car insurance cover
You must ensure that your vehicle has a valid tax disc displayed at all times (whether or not the car is being used or kept on the road)
You must not drive a vehicle without an MOT certificate
You cannot book a driving/riding test until you have passed the theory test
After passing your theory test you have 2 years to pass the practical driving test
After passing your practical test it is advisable to display GREEN P plates for 6 months
New drivers who accumulate 6 penalty points in the first 2 years after passing their driving test WILL LOSE THEIR LICENCE..

Travelling Abroad

Loads of people are taking time out after school or college to travel more, and employers and university staff are beginning  to appreciate the maturity and self reliance that this gives young people. Try gapyear.com  www.gapyear.com for more info.

Travelling abroad can introduce you to new cultures and environments. It can be exhausting but fun and need not be too expensive. You can pick up some really cheap flights to all sorts of places, and there are special deals for coach and rail travel around Europe with the Eurolines and Inter-Rail card. If you are going further afield don’t forget that you may need to get ‘jabs’ in advance to protect you against some of the diseases you could contract.
